Chicago QB Rex Closes on Condo

September 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Condominium sales in the Trump International Hotel & Tower began closing last month, with Chicago Bears backup quarterback Rex Grossman among the first condo buyers to sign on the dotted line in the 92-story high-rise.

Mr. Grossman, who took the Bears to the Super Bowl in February 2007 but was benched for Kyle Orton before the start of this season, paid $2.68 million earlier this month for a 3,437-square-foot unit in the tower at 401 N. Wabash Ave. along with two parking spaces, according to property records filed with the Cook County Recorder of Deeds.

The purchase price is slightly less than the one-year, $3-million contract — not including incentives — that Mr. Grossman signed early this year with the Bears, when he was still in the running for the starter’s job.

The quarterback’s unit includes two bedrooms, four bathrooms, a den and a 17-by-12-foot “Media Room” — a perfect spot for reviewing game film.

Landing big-name athletes is a boon to upscale condo developers.

“Everybody wants to sell to a ballplayer. It’s great for the image,” says Gail Lissner, a vice-president with real estate consulting firm Appraisal Research Counselors.

A call for Mr. Grossman to the Bears media office wasn’t returned. Efforts to reach Mr. Trump in New York were unsuccessful, and a call to Trump’s local sales office wasn’t returned.
