Developer Jack Hoffman, the namesake of northwest suburban Hoffman Estates, died Tuesday of a brain hemorrhage.
Mr. Hoffman, 85, of Highland Park, built homes in the northwest suburbs in the early 1950s along with his father, Sam. The two began building affordable homes in the late 1940s around Phoenix for veterans returning home from World War II, according to newspaper accounts.
Mr. Hoffman’s son Buz is president of Hoffman Estates-based homebuilder Lakewood Homes Inc. Mr. Hoffman is also survived by his wife of 57 years, Selma, and three other grown children: Ed, Bonnie Lustig and Robbie Schreiber.
Hoffman Estates is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Mr. Hoffman was involved with some of the festivities. His firm, F & S Construction Inc., donated land to help found the village and also built the first six schools there, according to a Daily Herald story.
Services for Mr. Hoffman were held this morning at Chicago Jewish Funerals in Buffalo Grove.
